How To Visualize

Updated: Jan 8, 2023

So in several of my videos on my Youtube channel I have spoke about the importance of visualization and how it can be an effective tool in improving skills and preparing for events and important occasions. But many of you may be saying that’s all well and good. But how do I actually do it. Well.... if that’s a question you have, this post is for you.

So Today I am going to walk you through my simple and effective method of how to visualize a technique or practice, you want to develop and improve.

To do this you’ll need tree things which are:

  • Pen and paper.

  • Timer.

  • Relaxing music.

You’ll need the Pen and paper to list three things:

  • The technique/practice you want to Improve.

  • How is it performed (if you need help get your coach or someone experienced with the activity to help you but keep in mind that your own words are better because they are meaningful to you. Often when you describe the technique or practice, you will often notice the images appearing in your mind).

  • When is the best time to perform this technique/action (if this is a particular move or action).

Timer - could be your phone/smart watch:

  • Used to sent a limit so you don’t have to worry about time.

  • Use an ascending alarm/vibration smart watch if possible.

  • Set your timer for 3. 5, or 10 minutes (or 3x3 minutes, 1 min rest if your activity is structured in such a way for example.)

Music - could also be your phone:

  • Use headphones to prevent distraction.

  • Music with no words is possible helps.

  • Unfamiliar tracks (so you don’t start singing the words and get distracted)

  • Create a playlist before hand, put a track on repeat or make sure the track you are using exceeds the length of your practice timer.

Once you have your:

  • Paper with you technique/practice written down.

  • Your timer set.

  • And you playlist ready.

  • You can now begin.

Process:

  • Start by finding yourself a comfortable space to begin your practice.

  • Read part 2 and 3 of what you wrote on the paper (how and when) several times until you can picture them clearly in your mind.

  • Start you timer,

  • close your eyes , begin breathing in and out slowly through your nose (Tongue top of mouth) and begin your practice.

  • When the timer finishes take a minute or so to slowly open your eyes and reflect on your practice taking note of how well it it went and any revelations you had about how to improve your practice in future.
